JERSEY HEDGEHOG PRESERVATION GROUP Hedgehogs are one of the most iconic creatures you are likely to come across in Jersey, helping to keep down pests in our gardens, and enhancing our countryside. They have to overcome more and more obstacles to survive here, habitat loss due to development, the biannual hedge cutting for the branchage, and our changing climate. Hotter, drier summers make it harder to find food and raise their young. Warmer, wetter winters mean they may not hibernate. For over thirty years, the Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group has been there to help sick, orphaned and injured animals. Up until now it has been run by volunteers, but we have to look to the future, to ensure we keep going despite the rising costs of food, medicines and veterinary care. Please think of us as you prepare your wishes for the future.

Please provide lots of bowls of water on the ground for hedgehogs in your garden. If you can also provide some dog or cat food, you will be saving lives. In this dry weather hedgehogs cannot dig to find their own natural food, the ground is too hard

This poor boy was found last night he has an old strimmer wound to his head which was full of maggots and his nose has been cut. It is the nose which is the main cause for concern, if it is too badly damaged he will have to be put to sleep. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN USING ANY KIND OF BLADE AND CHECK FOR HEDGEHOGS BEFORE YOU START CUTTING.

2 lucky hedgehogs rescued today, the first one was found in an underground car park. 2 kind residents waited with him until he was collected, he must have got through the metal gate at the other end of the car park and not been able to find his way out again. The second one was rescued from the middle of the road on St Aubin's Hill. Many thanks to the lorry driver for stopping the traffic to rescue the little hog and to D B Cummings for phoning us and giving the driver directions to find us

This is a lovely video by Jill King of a mother hedgehog gathering bedding for her maternity nest. You may also see healthy female hedgehogs out in daylight doing this or out foraging. If they are walking with purpose and are not lying down or wobbling around please leave them alone, and give them a dish of water and some dog or cat food, so they can produce enough milk for their hoglets. If the hedgehog is sick or injured or you are not sure please phone 01534 734340 for help and advice.

It is Branchage time again, please take care when you cut, strim or mow, we are seeing injured hedgehogs frequently at this time of year and most of them are taken straight to the vets to be put to sleep. Please take time before you start work to check the area carefully for hedgehogs and other wildlife to avoid killing or injuring anything. Thank you.
